Detroit Pistons vs. New Orleans Pelicans

NBA: Monday, December 9, Smoothie King Center, New Orleans, Louisiana, 8:00 PM ET

The Detroit Pistons are in the best form since the beginning of the season. Detroit won three of the last four games, including the most recent one over the Central Division rivals Indiana Pacers at home. The Pistons now improved to a 9-14 record and are in the 9th place in the Eastern Conference.

The New Orleans Pelicans are in a disastrous form right now. They suffered eight consecutive defeats and were destroyed by the Dallas Mavericks on the road in the latest loss. The Pelicans dropped to a 6-17 record and are in the 14th position in the Western Conference.

These inter-conference rivals met twice in 2018-19, and the visiting team was better on each occasion.

The Pistons edged the Pacers in a tight encounter

Detroit bounced back from a big loss to the Milwaukee Bucks with a 108-101 home win over the divisional rivals Indiana Pacers. The Pistons played well in the opening half, but the visitors won the third quarter by 15 points, and Detroit had to work hard to snatch a win in the end. The hosts outjumped Indiana (51-33), and despite making six turnovers more than the Pacers (18-12), they managed to edge the rivals. Andre Drummond led Detroit with a double-double of 25 points and game-high 22 rebounds, along with game-high three steals and two blocks. Blake Griffin added 25 points, five assists, and a pair of thefts, Luke Kennard scored 15, while Derrick Rose had 14 points, five rebounds, and five dimes. Reggie Jackson (back) is out indefinitely, while Markieff Morris (neck) is questionable to face New Orleans on Monday.

“We knew this was going to be a playoff-style game, and the way we played down the stretch was indicative of how we wanted to approach this one,” Pistons head coach Dwane Casey said. “We were boxing out, we were hitting guys and if we got a foul, it was a hard foul. It wasn’t anything dirty, just good physical basketball.”

This season, the Pistons have the 18th offense in the NBA that averages 108.7 points per game, and they are facing the Pelicans’ 29th defense that allows 120.2 points per contest. The Pistons are 24th in rebounds with 43.0 and 9th in assists with 25.3 per game.

The Pelicans scored season-low 84 points in a loss to the Mavs

New Orleans scored miserable 32 points in the second half in a massive 130-84 road defeat to the Dallas Mavericks. The Pelicans shot only 36% from the field and made only three triples on 32 attempts (9.4%), and the loss was inevitable. J.J. Redick led the Pels with 15 points, while Jrue Holiday and Brandon Ingram followed him with 14 apiece. Zion Williamson (knee) and Darius Miller (Achilles) are out indefinitely, while Derrick Favors (personal) is questionable to take on the Pistons on Monday.

“A poorly played game, a poorly coached game,” Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry said.

This season, the Pelicans have the 10th offense in the NBA that averages 113.2 points per game, and they are facing the Pistons’ 13th defense that allows 108.5 points per contest. The Pelicans are 12th in rebounds with 44.3 and 25th in assists with 24.6 per game.
