Detroit Pistons vs. Philadelphia 76ers

NBA: Wednesday, March 11, Wells Fargo Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 7:00 PM ET

The Detroit Pistons head to Philadelphia on Wednesday night to meet the 76ers for the third and last time this regular season. They will try to avoid a sweep after losing to the Sixers 117-111 as 4-point home dogs in October and 125-109 as 6.5-point home dogs in December. The Pistons are winless in five straight meetings with the 76ers.

Detroit is riding a four-game losing streak. The Pistons have been terrible lately, winning only one of their previous 12 games overall. On the other side, the 76ers have just wrapped up a four-game journey on the west coast, recording just one win in that span.

The Pistons agony continues after another terrible performance and a double-digit loss in New York

Detroit is coming off a disappointing 96-84 defeat at the New York Knicks this past Sunday. The Pistons failed to cover a 5.5-point spread in another terrible display, as they shot only 36.3% from the field and 28.9% from beyond the arc against one of the worst teams in the league. Also, they lost the battle on the glass (51-35) while surrendering 54 points in the paint. Christian Wood led the Pistons with 22 points and eight rebounds, while Bruce Brown added 16 points and six assists.
“It was a one-point game going into the fourth quarter and we just couldn’t get anything going,” Pistons coach Dwane Casey said. “The ball just stuck and everybody that caught it, held it, and you’re not going to produce very many points doing that.”

The Pistons are nine and a half games behind No. 8 seed in the East, so their season is already ruined. Detroit is without Blake Griffin (knee), Luke Kennard (knee), and Derrick Rose (ankle), while John Henson (ankle) is doubtful to play against the 76ers. The Pistons can look to the future and think about the offseason after trading Andre Drummond away, so it’s no strange they are on a terrible run. Detroit scores 109.0 points per 100 possessions (21st in the league) while allowing 112.4 points in a return (22nd).

The wounded Sixers couldn’t beat the worst team in the league

Philadelphia is coming off a 118-114 defeat at the Golden State Warriors this past Saturday. The Sixers were listed as 3.5-point favorites to beat the worst team in the NBA but failed to meet the expectations. They were in front for most of the game, leading by as many as 10 points. However, the Sixers lost the fourth quarter 36-24. Al Horford led the 76ers with 22 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists; Tobias Harris had 24 points and four boards, while Glenn Robinson III added 15 points and six rebounds off the bench.
“The closeout period, the fourth quarter, defensively we were poor,” Sixers coach Brett Brown said. “When you look at bottom-line stuff, giving up almost 60 points in the paint, it’s tough to win (in) any situation if you’re giving up that many points in the paint and at the rim.”

The 76ers are still without Joel Embiid (shoulder) and Ben Simmons (back), while Josh Richardson cleared the concussion protocol and should be ready to go Wednesday night. Simmons is out indefinitely, but Embiid is making progress and is listed as questionable to play against the Pistons. Phila sits at the sixth spot of the Eastern Conference standings, a game behind the fifth-seeded Indiana Pacers and three games behind the fourth-seeded Miami Heat. At least, they are nine and a half games ahead of No. 7 seed. The Sixers score 110.1 points per 100 possessions (18th in the league) while surrendering 108.1 points in a return (6th).

The Detroit Pistons are an American professional basketball team based in Detroit, Michigan. The Pistons compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Eastern Conference Central Division and plays its home games at Little Caesars Arena. The team was founded in Fort Wayne, Indiana as the Fort Wayne (Zollner) Pistons in 1941, a member of the National Basketball League (NBL) where it won two NBL championships: in 1944 and 1945. The Pistons later joined the Basketball Association of America (BAA) in 1948. The NBL and BAA merged to become the NBA in 1949, and the Pistons became part of the merged league.[1][7] In 1957, the franchise moved to Detroit. The Pistons have won three NBA championships: in 1989, 1990 and 2004.
